Fish Eyes on Your Feet Are Not Calluses

A small, painful spot on the bottom of your foot might seem like an ordinary callus, but in some cases, it can be something entirely different. Commonly referred to as “fish eyes” in several countries, these stubborn skin growths are often plantar warts, a condition that can cause considerable discomfort when walking or standing. Unlike ordinary calluses, which develop from repeated pressure and friction, plantar warts are caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Their rough appearance, thickened surrounding skin, and sometimes dark central dots can make them surprisingly difficult to distinguish from corns or calluses without careful examination.

Plantar warts develop when HPV enters the outer layer of the skin through tiny cuts or breaks, particularly on the soles of the feet. Because the body’s weight constantly presses against them, these growths may develop inward beneath a thick layer of hardened skin rather than protruding noticeably outward. This explains why some people describe them as having deep roots, although plantar warts do not actually grow roots into the foot. The dark spots sometimes visible in their centers are usually tiny blood vessels that have clotted, rather than seeds or embedded foreign objects. These distinctive features can help medical professionals distinguish a wart from other common foot conditions.

One of the most important differences between plantar warts and calluses involves their underlying causes. Calluses are the body’s natural response to repeated friction or pressure, frequently developing beneath the heels or balls of the feet. Corns are similar areas of thickened skin that often have a concentrated central core. Plantar warts, however, result from a viral infection and can sometimes spread to nearby areas of the foot or to other people through contact with contaminated surfaces. Communal showers, swimming pool areas, and locker rooms can provide opportunities for transmission, particularly when someone walks barefoot with small breaks in the skin. Not every exposure causes an infection, but maintaining good foot hygiene and wearing protective footwear in shared facilities can help reduce the risk.

Treatment depends on the type of growth, its location, and the amount of discomfort it causes. Some plantar warts disappear naturally as the immune system clears the infection, while others persist for months or even years. Common treatments include salicylic acid preparations that gradually remove affected skin and cryotherapy, in which a healthcare professional applies extreme cold to destroy wart tissue. More persistent cases may require additional medical treatment. Attempting to dig out a suspected wart or cut deeply into the skin at home can cause bleeding, infection, and unnecessary injury. People with diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation in their feet, or weakened immune systems should seek professional guidance before attempting self-treatment.

Recognizing the difference between a plantar wart and an ordinary callus can prevent unnecessary discomfort and inappropriate treatment. A growth that becomes increasingly painful, changes appearance, bleeds, spreads, or fails to improve deserves examination by a qualified healthcare professional. Although plantar warts are generally benign, other skin conditions can occasionally resemble them, making an accurate diagnosis especially important. The next time you notice a rough circular spot on the sole of your foot, remember that not every thickened patch of skin develops from pressure alone. Understanding what lies behind the growth is the first step toward choosing the safest and most effective way to restore comfort and keep your feet healthy.
