In this fictional account, the problem began after he fell asleep beside an electric heating pad that had been placed directly against his skin. Instead of switching it off before falling asleep, he unknowingly remained exposed to the heat for several hours.

When he finally woke, his skin was intensely red and beginning to blister. The affected area stretched across his shoulder, back, and upper arm, and the pain became progressively worse. Realizing this was far beyond ordinary irritation, his family took him to the emergency department for treatment.

Doctors determined that prolonged heat exposure had caused significant burns. Because a sleeping person may not react quickly enough to increasing temperature, continuous contact with a heating device can damage skin before the person fully wakes. His injuries required cleaning, protective dressings, pain management, and continued medical observation.

Fortunately, doctors expected him to recover, but healing would take time. He was instructed to keep the injured areas protected and return for follow-up examinations so medical staff could watch for infection and determine whether additional treatment was necessary. The experience completely changed how he viewed something as ordinary as a heating pad.

The consequence of sleeping with the heating pad running was therefore much more serious than simple redness: prolonged exposure caused substantial thermal burns. Heating pads can be useful when used correctly, but falling asleep with one against the skin can increase the risk of burns, particularly when the heat is high or prolonged.
